No Heat? Here’s What to Check Before You Call a Professional
When the temperatures drop, few things are more stressful than waking up to a cold house. While a “no heat” call can have several causes, many times the fix is simple and doesn’t require a service visit. At Aire Solutions, we want to help you stay warm and save money, so here are some of the most common “no heat” calls—and what you can check before calling a professional.
1. Check the Thermostat
It sounds simple, but this is one of the top reasons for no-heat calls!
✅ Make sure the thermostat is set to HEAT and the temperature is higher than the room temperature.
✅ If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.
✅ For smart thermostats, check your Wi-Fi connection or app settings—some systems can get stuck in “away” or “eco” modes.
2. Check the Power Switch
Most furnaces have a power switch (often looks like a light switch) mounted near the unit. Sometimes it gets turned off accidentally.
✅ Make sure it’s in the ON position.
✅ Also check your breaker panel—look for any tripped breakers related to the furnace or air handler.
3. Check the Filter
A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow and cause your furnace to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution.
✅ Remove and inspect the filter.
✅ If it looks dirty, replace it with a clean one.
✅ Make sure the arrow on the filter frame points toward the furnace.
4. Check the Gas Supply
If you have a gas furnace:
✅ Make sure the gas valve to the furnace is open (the handle should be parallel to the pipe).
✅ If you recently had other gas appliances serviced, double-check that their gas supply wasn’t turned off as well.
⚠️ If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and call your gas company or 911.
5. Check the Furnace Door and Safety Switch
Many furnaces have a door safety switch that shuts the system down if the panel isn’t fully closed.
✅ Make sure the front panel is snug and latched.
✅ If you were recently checking your filter or inspecting the unit, the panel might just need to be reseated.
6. Check for Blocked Vents or Intake Pipes
Snow, leaves, or debris can block your intake or exhaust pipes (especially for high-efficiency furnaces).
✅ Carefully clear away any obstructions.
✅ Make sure indoor vents and returns aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs.
7. Check the Condensate Drain (High-Efficiency Furnaces)
If your furnace has a small plastic drain line, it could be part of the condensate system.
✅ If the drain is clogged, it can trigger a safety switch that stops the furnace.
✅ You can try gently cleaning the drain line or trap, but if it’s frozen or completely backed up, it’s time to call a pro.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve checked all these items and your furnace still won’t start—or you’re hearing unusual noises, smelling gas, or seeing error codes—it’s best to call the experts.
A trained technician can safely diagnose issues with the ignition system, pressure switch, control board, flame sensor, or other components.
